Making the Invisible Felt / MICHELOB ULTRA "DREAMCASTER"
Cameron Black was born blind, but he had one dream: to call an NBA game. Michelob Ultra spent a year making that dream actually come true.
The problem
Sports fans with visual impairments could "hear" a game, but they couldn't "feel" it. Michelob Ultra is a brand built on the idea that fun doesn't count unless everyone can have it—but that fun wasn't reaching everyone.
The insight
Enjoying basketball isn't really about hearing sounds. It's about feeling the movement and the energy. So what was needed wasn't commentary you could simply hear, but commentary translated into something you could feel.
The idea
FCB New York spent a year working with Cameron to build a system called AURA. By combining vibration, spatial audio, braille, and gesture controls, they made it possible to feel the movement of a game with your whole body. Then in the 4th month of 2023, during a live NBA playoff broadcast, Cameron became the first blind commentator in history to call a game.
What happened
The broadcast reached 10.4 million people, and the campaign won the Grand Prix in Entertainment Lions for Sport at Cannes Lions. It also picked up several other awards, including a Sports Emmy.
Afterthought
This wasn't an ad that sold a dream—it showed the actual moment a dream came true. A year spent building the technology, shaping the language with Cameron, and finally putting the microphone in his hands. When inclusion stops being decoration and becomes the actual tool, this is how powerful it can be.
