The Day a TV Network Said 'Don't Watch Too Much TV' / TVE "SCOOTER"

1989. Spain's state broadcaster TVE said something about itself: "Our shows are great, but watching too much isn't good for you." An advertiser telling people to consume less of its own product? That shouldn't happen. But they did it.

The insight

Kids getting too glued to the television — who's sadder about that than anyone else? The dog, who's stopped getting any attention. That shift in perspective was the key to delivering a "balance matters" message without ever sounding preachy.

The idea

A boy sits frozen in front of the TV, not moving an inch. The dog desperately tries everything: bringing him a leash, a deflated soccer ball, a toy sailboat. Finally it even rides a kick scooter right past him — but the boy doesn't so much as glance up. The dog sighs and buries its head in its paws. In the follow-up, the dog packs a suitcase and runs away from home.

What happened

In 1989 it won the Grand Prix at the Cannes International Advertising Festival. It's remembered as one of the landmark ads in Spanish advertising history.

Afterthought

It always takes nerve for an advertiser to say "don't buy it," "don't use it," or "don't watch it." But when a brand pulls that off, trust in it rises a notch. The question this TV network asked of itself back in 1989 still resonates today, in 2026. If anything, it might hit even harder now.
